Kaziranga - Meghalaya

A land blessed with abundant rainfall and thunderous waterfalls, Meghalaya stands true to its Sanskrit meaning ‘The Abode of Clouds’. Beautiful cloud formations against the backdrop of the rich blue sky paint a surreal image of the land. This beauty is further accentuated by its friendly tribes, the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo. Like the other North Eastern tribes they have a rich tradition of music and dance, but what sets them apart is their custom of a matrilineal society where descent is traced through the mother. Interesting road side markets and archery competitions coupled with natural wonders like root bridges and limestone caves characterize our visit to the abode of clouds. Shillong, popularly referred to as the Scotland of the East holds many surprises for us, while Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia bowls us over with its picture postcard image. In Cherrapunjee we walk down the unique root bridges built from the roots of the ficus tree and enter into the strange world of the hidden limestone caves.
